What is GPT Image 2.6 Sunburst?
GPT Image 2.6 Sunburst is the quality-focused version of GPT Image 2.6, released by OpenAI on November 4, 2026. OpenAI describes it as higher quality than the faster Flare version, with greater consistency across edits. On CVY.AI you can use it in your browser with no OpenAI account or API key.
Sunburst is the one to choose when a result needs to hold up. Product shots, images built from your own reference photos and edits to an existing picture are where the extra care pays off. It does take longer: our still images took 24 to 42 seconds on Sunburst, against 12 to 31 seconds on Flare, so we usually test an idea on Flare first and move to Sunburst for the final version.
Reference images are the main way to work with it. Upload up to ten photos of a product, person or style, then describe what you want. With Quality off, the price stays at 4 credits at 1K however many references you add. With Quality on, each reference adds 2 credits. Generated products can still drift from the real thing, so compare logos, labels, shapes and colors with your original before you use the image.
Quality off gives you a fixed 4 credits at 1K, which suits most everyday product images. Turn Quality on when you need 2K, 4K, a transparent background or more detail. Standard costs 7, 14 and 21 credits at 1K, 2K and 4K. Plus costs 10, 20 and 30, and Fine costs 15, 25 and 35. Ultra and Max cost the most, and are worth trying for images with small or dense text. With Quality on, Sunburst and Flare cost the same.
Transparent backgrounds are useful for shop listings, slides and sticker sets, because you can place the result on anything. Turn on Quality and then Transparent background, and describe the subject as usual. Avoid asking for a background in the prompt, and check the edges of fine details such as hair or glass.
Sunburst can also make animated GIFs. Turn on the Animated GIF switch, and with Quality off you pay 4 credits and let the size and length be chosen for you. Our cat sticker came back with nine frames over 1.8 seconds. With Quality on you can choose a ratio, 2 to 16 frames and 1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds, and start from a reference image. While the GIF switch is on, Transparent background, 2K and 4K are unavailable.
A simple way to work is to write the prompt once and improve one thing at a time. Start at 1K with Quality off to check the idea and the composition. When the image is close, add a clearer reference photo or name the exact detail you want changed, such as the label, the angle or the light. Turn on Quality only for the final version, and choose a higher level only if the text or fine detail still falls short. This keeps most of your attempts at 4 credits.
Whichever settings you use, check generated words, numbers and product details before you publish. Our guide to GPT Image 2.6 shows the same prompts with their results and prices if you want to see more before you spend credits.
What GPT Image 2.6 Sunburst is good at
Steadier edits
OpenAI built Sunburst for higher quality and more consistency across edits. Use it when you are changing one thing in an image and want the rest to stay as it is.
Products in new scenes
Add up to ten reference photos and describe the scene. We put a black water bottle into a sunny gym from two reference photos, at 1K with Quality off, for 4 credits.
Real transparent backgrounds
Turn on Quality, then Transparent background, and you get a real cut-out with nothing behind the subject. Our green mug took 7 credits at Standard.
Detail when you need it
Five quality levels, from Standard to Max, go up to 4K. Spend more on covers, posters and images with small text, and less on everyday product shots.
Animated GIFs
Sunburst has the same Animated GIF switch as Flare. With Quality off a GIF costs 4 credits. With Quality on you control the ratio, frames, duration and reference images.
Full-length fashion and lifestyle shots
In our test, a street fashion prompt came back with believable fabric, natural pose and clean background detail. It is a useful step before a lookbook or an ad draft.
